Here at Hackman’s, we’ve been enjoying the beautiful weather and getting ready for the Easter chicks to join us at the store.  They should be joining us the week before Easter.  Here are some of the cuties we had last year:

We will be sharing updates on the chicks to let you know when they hatch and when you can come see them at the store.  If you have kids, or know someone who does, we recommend that you pick up the new Veggie Tales DVD while you’re at it!

Right now we’re getting ready for our Immersion Day tomorrow from 9 AM- 3:30 PM.  We’re so excited to have Dr. Stoll and his wife in here to talk about nutrition and loving your body the way God intended.  We will also be providing a catered lunch.  We encourage you to check out this great video by Dr. Stoll:

If you can’t join us, you can purchase his Fully Alive! Book and Kristen Stoll’s cookbook here at the store.

Make sure to join us on Twitter!  A little birdie told me we might be holding a contest on there.  Tweet, Tweet!

If you’re looking for a perfect Easter present, I suggest that you check out our adorable little lambs that plays “Jesus Loves Me”.  We’ve been selling these for many, many years and they are always a huge hit.

We’ve heard some wonderful stories from our customers about the lambs.  They make a wonderful Easter or Christening gift, and many families have started a tradition, like Roger and his family:

“Thirty five years ago, we had our first grandson.  I came home from work and my wife said to me, ‘Look what I bought for him’.  It was a small lamb that played Jesus Loves Me.  That was the start of the family tradition.  Since that time we have purchased fourteen lambs for our grandchildren and four for our great grand-children.  I lost my wife Sept. 5, 1995, but I have purchased the last two myself for two great granddaughters.  You keep up the good Hackman tradition and as long as I am able I will keep up our tradition.  When I am unable to do so, I know my daughters will do the same.”

We’re also still looking for entries for our Facebook contest to win 2 tickets to Dr. Stoll’s Immersion Day on March 24.  Just let us know, on Facebook (or here) about your experiences with how Dr. Stoll’s system (or any type of healthy eating) has changed your life for the better, OR how you think Dr. Stoll’s system can help you to change your life.  Immersion Day will be an exciting event with great information on biblical nutrition, and a healthy catered lunch.  The contest will be ending on Tuesday, so there are only a couple more days to enter!

Also, our new website is live!  Please let us know what you think! (www.hackmans.com).  There are pictures and useful information on the site, and we also encourage you to visit our online store.

Last time Dr. Stoll visited the store and spoke about his book Alive! and his biblical nutrition system, he was a big hit.  We had quite a few people asking us if he would be visiting the store again, so we’re pleased to announce our next big event:

Dr. Stoll will be joining us in the store on March 24 for an Immersion Day from 9 AM to 3:30 PM- Reservations are required.  Dr. Stoll and his wife, Kristen Stoll, will be lecturing throughout the day.  A healthy, gourmet catered lunch will be provided by Eliane DeSouza, using recipes from Kristen Stoll’s  book, “Kristen’s Healthy Kitchen”.  Tea and fruit will be provided by Frey’s Natural Foods.

There will also be health displays, a gift basket giveaway (donated by Queen’s Nutritional Products), and you will be given a Fully Alive wristband, pen, and notepad.  It will be a fantastic day filled with good food and great conversation.  If you register before March 14, the fee is $60, and it is $65 if you register after that.  Check out our Facebook page to see how you can enter to win a pair of tickets!

New Foursquare promotion!

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our VBS preview night.  We had a lot of fun, and learned a lot of ways to help children connect with God.  Don’t forget, we put a discussion board on our Facebook page for VBS leaders to share stories, find props, and talk about anything VBS related.  You can find the link on the left-hand side of our page.

Many of you have noticed the changes at our store recently, with the new event center, the chapel, and the promotions we have been running.  We’re really excited about the changes, and we have a couple new changes to announce as well.

Hackman’s is now on Foursquare!  Foursquare is a GPS based mobile app that allows you to “check-in” when you visit a location.  The first time you check-in at Hackmans, you will unlock a special for a free laser engraved pen with any purchase.  Just show the unlocked special to one of our employees, and we will engrave your free pen while you wait.

Our new website should hopefully be up within the next week or two, and we have a new logo that we’re rolling out as well.

We’d love to hear your feedback on all these exciting new changes.  If there are any specials events that you would like to see Hackman’s do, we’d love to hear your suggestions!  Our new chapel in the store is also complete.  It is a great place for a small group, or to sit and pray.

Don’t forget- you can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Foursquare!

Valentine’s Day is looming, and we were so impresed with the submissions we received for our Amishview Inn giveaway.   The winner will be announced this week.  This Valentine’s Day, make sure you let the people you care about know you love them, and give thanks to God for the blessings they give you every day.

If you’re still looking for a special gift, stop by and check out our selection of engraveable gifts.  We’ll engrave for you while you wait.  An engraved bible or other gift is something that your loved one can use time and time again, and cherish for years to come.

For those of you who like to bake or eat chocolate on Valentine’s Day (and who doesn’t?), we suggest giving this healthy chocolate pie recipe a try.  The recipe can be found in “Kristen’s Healthy Kitchen Recipes”, by Kristen Stoll.  If you don’t have a copy, you can pick one up in store.

Chocolate Pie:

Pie Crust:

1 1/2 cups spelt flour

1/2 cup barley flour

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup Earth Balance butter

2 tablespoons cold water (enough to get your pie dough consistancy)

Mix in food processor until dough rolls up into a ball.  Roll out into a pie shell.

Bake until light brown.

Filling:

4 avocados

3/4 cup cocoa

1 cup date paste

2 teaspoons vanilla

water

Mix in food processor until super creamy.  Add water as needed for desired texture.

Serve.

Bonus #1 You can use this filling as pudding; just omit the pie shell and place in a bowl.  Top with sliced strawberries and a dallop of cashew cream.

Our next event coming up is on Feb. 15, at 10 AM: a discussion on ROMANS 12, “The Christian Life”.  For those of you who missed our Dr. Stoll and Courageous bible studies, remember you can still discuss these topics in the “discussions” area of our Facebook page.  We will be featuring another event featuring Dr. Stoll this coming month that will be very exciting.  We’ll have more details soon.

Reflections

One of the many reasons that we decided to start this blog was due to inspiration from Ruth Hackman’s, “Reflections”, a column in the Morning Call that started on Nov. 2, 1974, and ran for 22 years.

Originally intended as a sales column for Hackman’s, “Reflections” quickly became a “personal chitchat” column, which readers were thrilled with.  The column read very much like blogs today do.  Ruth would offer personal reflections, talk about her family, and share household tips.

Not only did Ruth’s column make Hackman’s and their store widely known around the valley, but she offered a subtle spritual guide for those that had lost their way, and invited customers and readers into the Hackman’s lives.

Thank you, Ruth, for starting such a wonderful tradition and creating the community relationships that we value so dearly.

Our next bible study will be on Feb. 8 at 10 am, and led by Ron Ridenour.  The topic is “ROMANS 12: The Christian Life”.  Registration is requested; we hope to see you there!

Happy Birthday Joe!

Yesterday was Joe’s birthday and we wanted to take the time here to wish him a happy birthday, and to thank him for all the wonderful things he does, every day.

Our Facebook friends were also wonderful, as usual, and sent many well-wishes Joe’s way.

Our last men’s bible study on Courageous will be tonight at 7pm.  Some members have expressed interest in being able to continue to chat with other fathers about the issues they face every day.  We’ve set up a discussion board, and you can join by going to our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/hackmansbiblebookstore) and clicking on the “discussions” tab on the left of the page.

Our next upcoming event is “ROMANS 12: The Christian Life” Bible Study Fellowship led by Ron Ridenour.  We will be holding them Feb. 1,8,15, & 22 at 10am.  We would love to hear what you think about our new event center!

If you’re already thinking about Valentine’s Day, don’t forget to check out our engraveable gifts.  We have a great selection, and the items will be engraved while you wait.  Also, we are starting a really exciting giveaway on our Facebook page, so stay tuned!
